I love when I'm having a discussion with someone and they try to use the excuse of someone being hurt as a reason not to do something. For example:
How about we try to solve this problem in a more proactive way. For example:
Now I know some people will tell me "well you can't just tell kids not to be a bully so you should prepare your child." And I agree; currently, kids will still be bullies even if they're told not to so we should warn our kids about bullying. But if we start telling them that now and start making it a social norm, we eventually won't have to warn our children about being bullied. Starting from the oppressors side of the problem can (in the long-run) help reduce tragic things from happening more effectively than starting from the victims side of the problem. If we work from both ends though, we can go even farther than we could with just one method.
- Women shouldn't drink because they could get drugged and raped
- Same sex couples shouldn’t be able to adopt because their kids will get bullied for having two moms or two dads
- Men should be physically strong so they can attract a girlfriend/wife
- Why is she still with him if he abuses her?
How about we try to solve this problem in a more proactive way. For example:
- Men shouldn't rape (side note: I acknowledge that women can be rapists as well, not just men)
- You should teach your kid not to be a bully
- Women should be able to see men as attractive regardless of their physical strength
- Everyone should be physically strong because it's healthy
- Why is he abusing her (side note: I acknowledge that women can be abusers as well, not just men)
